You have seen the caption a hundred times. Comment the word GUIDE and I will send it straight to your DMs. It looks like a gimmick until you watch one work properly, and then you realise what is actually happening: a public comment is being converted into a private one-to-one conversation, at scale, with no human involved. Instagram rewards the comments, the follower gets what they wanted in seconds, and you end up with a contact you can message again. That is the whole mechanism, and building it takes about twenty minutes.
You will need a ManyChat account with Instagram connected before any of this works, and the free tier caps you at 25 active contacts, which one decent post will exhaust. You can set up ManyChat here with 50% off your first two months, which is enough runway to test properly.

Before You Build Anything
You Need a Professional Account
Instagram only exposes messaging permissions to Business or Creator accounts. If yours is still personal, switch it in Instagram settings first. Nothing below will connect otherwise, and the error message you get is not especially helpful about why.
You Need Something Worth Sending
This is the step people skip. The automation is trivial. The offer is not. A link to your homepage will not earn a comment. A specific, immediately useful thing will. Have the asset ready before you build the flow, because the flow is fifteen minutes and the asset is the actual work.
Step One: Connect Instagram
Inside ManyChat, go to Settings and then Channels, and connect Instagram. You will be asked to authorise through Facebook, since Instagram messaging permissions route through the linked Facebook Page. Grant every permission it requests. Withholding one usually breaks message sending in a way that is difficult to diagnose later.
Then check that Instagram’s own setting allows access to messages. It sits under Privacy and then Messages in the Instagram app. If that toggle is off, ManyChat will connect successfully and then silently fail to deliver anything.
Step Two: Choose Your Keyword Carefully
This decision affects your bill more than any other, so it deserves a minute of thought.
Specific Beats Broad
A trigger set to fire on any comment will capture everyone who typed a fire emoji. Every one of those people becomes an active contact you are billed for, and none of them wanted anything. A specific keyword requires the person to read your instruction and follow it, which is a small act of intent that filters your list for free.
Pick Words Nobody Types by Accident
Avoid words that appear in normal conversation. YES, PLEASE and INFO will all fire on comments that were never meant to trigger anything. Use something distinctive and tied to the offer, and set it as an exact match rather than a contains match.
| Keyword approach | Contacts captured | Lead quality | Cost efficiency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any comment triggers | Highest | Lowest | Poor |
| Common word, contains match | High | Mixed | Weak |
| Distinctive word, exact match | Moderate | High | Strong |
| Distinctive word plus follow requirement | Lowest | Highest | Strongest |
Narrower triggers cost less and convert better, which is a rare case of the cheap option also being the good one. The keyword and trigger settings live inside the ManyChat flow builder here under the Instagram automation section.
Step Three: Build the Flow
Go to Automation and create a new one, choosing the Instagram comment trigger. Select whether it applies to a specific post or to all posts. Start with a specific post while you are testing.
The Opening Message Matters Most
Instagram’s rules mean your first DM should feel like a reply to something the person did, because it is. Reference the comment. Confirm what is coming. Keep it to two short lines. A wall of text at this stage reads as automated and gets ignored.
Ask for the Reply Before the Link
This is the technique that separates functional flows from good ones. Send a message asking them to reply with a single word or tap a button before you deliver the link. That reply confirms an active conversation, which improves deliverability on subsequent messages and gives you a contact who has genuinely engaged rather than one who received a DM and never opened it.
Then Deliver, and Stop
Send the thing you promised. Do not pitch in the same message. The pitch belongs in a follow-up a day or two later, and sending it immediately is the fastest way to get muted by someone who was, thirty seconds earlier, genuinely interested.
Step Four: Handle the Public Comment
Add an auto-reply to the comment itself, not just the DM. Two reasons. It tells the commenter their action worked, which prevents them commenting three more times and inflating nothing but your own confusion. And it adds visible engagement to the post, which the algorithm notices.
Vary the reply text across a few options. Identical replies stacked under a post look mechanical and can attract the wrong kind of platform attention.
Step Five: Test Before You Post
- Comment the keyword yourself from a second account and confirm the DM arrives.
- Check the message renders properly on mobile, since that is where every recipient will see it.
- Confirm the link works and points somewhere that loads fast on a phone connection.
- Try a near-miss spelling to see whether your match setting is too strict or too loose.
- Watch your active contact count before and after so you know what one test costs.
Testing from a second account is the step most people skip and most people regret. Set up your ManyChat account here and run the full flow on a quiet post before you attach it to anything you are promoting.
The Mistakes That Cost Money
Running the Trigger on All Posts
Convenient, and expensive. Every old post keeps capturing contacts for an offer you may have retired months ago. Scope triggers to specific posts and retire them when the campaign ends.
Never Cleaning the List
ManyChat bills on active contacts, so anyone lingering with no engagement in ninety days is pure cost. Make removal a monthly habit. It is the single most effective way to keep a growing account on a lower tier.
Treating the DM as the Finish Line
Delivering the asset is the start of the relationship, not the end of it. Without a planned follow-up sequence, you have paid for a contact and then done nothing with them, which is the most common way this whole approach fails to pay for itself.
Keeping Track of What Actually Worked
Once you are running three or four of these across different posts and offers, the obvious question becomes hard to answer: which one is producing customers rather than contacts? ManyChat shows you flow-level numbers. It does not connect them to your content calendar, your offers, or the revenue that followed.
Our Social Media Marketing Management template for Notion is built for solo creators running exactly this. Plan posts, track which offer each one carried, log performance, and keep your content strategy and your funnel results in the same place instead of in two dashboards that never talk to each other.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this get my account restricted?
Comment-to-DM is an officially supported use of Instagram’s messaging API, so the mechanism itself is fine. Risk comes from behaviour rather than tooling: identical repeated replies, unsolicited pitching, and messaging people who never interacted with you.
Can I do this on the free plan?
You can build and test it, but 25 active contacts means one moderately successful post exhausts your allowance. It is enough to verify the flow works and not enough to run a campaign.
How many keywords should one post have?
One. Multiple keywords on a single post confuse people and split your results, making it impossible to tell which offer actually resonated.
Start Small
Build one flow, on one post, with one distinctive keyword and one genuinely useful asset. Watch what it does to your contact count and your reply rate for a fortnight before you build a second. The people who get burned by this are almost always the ones who launched five automations in a week and could not tell you which of them was working.
Two months at half price is enough to build one flow properly and measure it honestly. Get started with ManyChat here and give yourself a single post to learn on.
