Wati vs Manychat: WhatsApp vs Instagram DM Automation for Small Business (2026)

Your customers already picked the app they want to talk to you on. The right DM tool is the one that lives there, not the one with the longest feature list.

Wati vs Manychat is one of the most common questions small businesses ask once their inbox starts to overflow, and it is also one of the most misleading. On paper both tools automate messages. In practice they were built for different jobs: Wati is a WhatsApp Business API platform with a shared team inbox, broadcasts and chatbots, while Manychat is a DM growth tool that turns Instagram comments, story replies and Messenger chats into leads and sales.

This guide compares the two side by side: channels, pricing (Pricing as of October 2026), WhatsApp message fees, team inbox, broadcasts, chatbot builders, AI and integrations. Then it helps you pick based on one simple question: where do your customers actually message you? We also cover when running both makes sense.

Quick answer

Pick by channel. If most of your customer conversations happen on WhatsApp and several people need to answer them, choose Wati. If you want to turn Instagram (or Messenger and TikTok) attention into leads with comment-to-DM and story automations, choose Manychat.

  • Wati: WhatsApp-first support and sales inbox, campaigns (broadcasts) and no-code bots. Plans start at $59/month billed annually ($69 monthly), with a 7-day free trial. Meta’s per-message WhatsApp fees are extra.
  • Manychat: Instagram-first DM growth automation that also supports WhatsApp, Messenger, TikTok, SMS and email. Free plan available; under the 2026 pricing, WhatsApp starts on Pro at $29/month billed annually ($39 monthly).
  • Use both when Instagram brings in the leads but WhatsApp is where your team closes and supports customers.

Why Wati and Manychat solve different jobs

Most “vs” posts treat these two as direct rivals. They do overlap, since both now touch WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. But each one is built around a different moment in the customer journey.

Wati is built for conversations that are already happening. A customer messages your WhatsApp number about an order, a booking or a quote, and your team needs to see it, assign it, answer it and follow up. Wati puts that into a shared Team Inbox, adds no-code chatbots for the routine questions, and lets you send approved template campaigns to opted-in contacts. Its homepage headline sums it up: “Answer every WhatsApp message.”

Manychat is built for starting conversations. Someone comments a keyword under your Reel, replies to a story or mentions you, and Manychat instantly sends them a DM with a link, a discount or a question that captures their email. It is a growth and lead capture tool first, with an inbox attached, rather than an inbox with growth features attached.

That difference matters more than any feature checkbox. A clinic in a WhatsApp-heavy market and a creator selling a course on Instagram both “need DM automation”, but they need very different tools.

Wati: the WhatsApp team inbox

Wati is an official WhatsApp Business API provider. Its homepage says it is “Trusted by 16,000+ businesses across 190+ countries” and lists 12B+ messages sent. The pitch is simple: bring every WhatsApp conversation into one place, automate the repetitive part and let humans handle the rest.

Team Inbox

The shared Team Inbox is the heart of Wati. According to Wati’s product page, you can “Create teams and assign conversations to users”, build teams for sales, support or day and night shifts, and tag contacts (for example, VIPs). The page also mentions one-click AI translation so agents can reply in the customer’s language.

Wati’s help center describes the inbox as a shared inbox across all connected channels, so Instagram and Facebook conversations can sit next to WhatsApp ones. For a small team, the practical win is that nobody needs to share one phone, and every chat has an owner.

Broadcasts (now called Campaigns)

WhatsApp does not let businesses message people out of the blue with free text. Outbound messages outside the 24-hour customer service window must use pre-approved templates. Wati’s Campaigns feature (previously Broadcasts) is built around that rule. Based on Wati’s help article “How to send your first Campaign”, the flow looks like this:

  1. Open Campaigns and click Create New Campaign, then give it a name.
  2. Choose Single send or Drip campaign.
  3. Select an approved template. Add Quick Reply buttons if you want replies to trigger automation.
  4. Pick the audience: import a list, use All Contacts, filter by contact attributes, or use Segments (Pro or Business plans only).
  5. Send now or schedule a date and time, then click Publish and follow results in Campaign Overview.

Make sure contacts are saved with country codes, which Wati flags as a common reason messages fail. The Growth plan includes 15k broadcasts a month; Pro and Business list unlimited broadcasts (you still pay Meta per message).

No-code chatbots and AI

Wati’s chatbot builder is a drag-and-drop flow builder for routine questions: opening hours, order status, pricing, booking requests. Wati’s chatbot page says you can “Build and launch an intelligent WhatsApp chatbot in 3 minutes” and connect bots to Google Sheets, HubSpot and Zapier. Bots can also hand a chat to a specific team or user.

On the AI side, every plan includes Wati CoPilot credits for agents (250 on Growth, 500 on Pro, 1,500 on Business). Astra, Wati’s AI agent that can run conversations end to end and hand off to a human, is an add-on priced separately on Pro.

Wati pricing (as of October 2026)

  • Growth: $59/month billed annually or $69 billed monthly. 3 users, 15k broadcasts/month, 1,000 automation triggers, 2 commerce or CRM integrations, 10k API calls/month, 250 CoPilot credits.
  • Pro: $119/month billed annually or $149 billed monthly. 5 users (extra users $39/user/month), unlimited broadcasts, 2,000 automation triggers, 5 integrations including HubSpot, 500 CoPilot credits, advanced chatbots and inbox.
  • Business: shown as “Contact Us” on the pricing page. 5 users (extra users $89/user/month), 5,000 automation triggers, unlimited integrations including Salesforce, multiple WhatsApp numbers and a dedicated Customer Success Manager.

There is a 7-day free trial and no setup fee, and Wati advertises up to roughly 25% off with annual billing. Extra automation triggers are sold in packs (from $40/month for 1,000), and additional WhatsApp numbers are listed at $29/month per number. The plan price does not include WhatsApp message fees, covered below.

Manychat: the Instagram DM growth engine

Manychat started on Facebook Messenger and became the go-to tool for Instagram DM automation. Its homepage says it is “Trusted by 1M+ Businesses”, with 4B+ conversations and 170+ countries. The Instagram product page headline is “Discover the real power of Instagram DMs” and covers feed posts, Reels, Instagram Live and story replies, reactions and mentions.

Comment-to-DM and other Instagram triggers

The feature most people buy Manychat for is the comment trigger: someone comments a keyword on your post or Reel and gets an automatic DM. Manychat also offers triggers for story replies, story mentions, Live comments, shares to DM and a Follow to DM beta. Based on Manychat’s help article “Quick Automation: Auto-DM links from comments”, setup works like this:

  1. Go to Automations, then My Automations, and click +New Automation. Choose Auto-DM links from comments.
  2. Pick the trigger source: A specific post or reel, Any post or reel or Next post or reel.
  3. Set the trigger words, or let any comment trigger it. Optionally add up to three public replies that Manychat rotates.
  4. Choose optional steps: an Opening DM, a follow check, and email collection.
  5. Write the main message (up to three links), add an optional follow-up DM for people who do not click, and click Go Live.

For a fuller walkthrough with examples, see our Manychat Instagram comment-to-DM setup guide.

Inbox, broadcasts and AI

Manychat does have a shared Inbox where your team can take over conversations, but seats are limited by plan. Per Manychat’s help center, Pro includes 3 users and 2 Inbox seats (expandable to 3 at $25 per extra seat), while Business includes 5 users and 3 Inbox seats (expandable to 5). It works well for answering leads that the automations generate, but it is not as central to the product as Wati’s Team Inbox.

Manychat AI covers four features listed on its AI page: a Flow Builder assistant, a Text improver, an AI Step you can drop into automations, and Intention recognition that responds to what people mean rather than exact keywords. Under the 2026 plans, AI-powered automation starts on Pro.

Manychat pricing after the 2026 change

Manychat introduced a new pricing model on 2 March 2026. Its help center says the new plans apply to accounts created on or after that date, that older accounts cannot switch yet, and that availability varies by region. Plans are priced by active contacts, meaning people your automations interact with in a month.

  • Free: up to 25 active contacts, basic automations.
  • Essential: $14/month billed annually, up to 250 active contacts, unlimited automations and lead capture tools.
  • Pro: $29/month billed annually or $39 billed monthly, up to 2,500 active contacts, up to 3 channels (WhatsApp included as an option), AI-powered automation, 14-day free trial.
  • Business: $69/month billed annually or $99 billed monthly, up to 7,500 active contacts, unlimited channels, lead routing and advanced Inbox workflows.
  • Advanced: $139/month billed annually, up to 25,000 active contacts, expanded team access and API access.

Going over your contact limit costs extra: Pro lists $0.05 per additional contact on monthly billing ($0.038 on annual), and Business lists $0.025 ($0.018 annual). One caveat: depending on your region and account age, the public pricing page may still show the older Free, Pro and Premium layout, so check what your own account sees before budgeting. We break the change down further in Manychat pricing 2026 explained.

WhatsApp message fees: what both tools pass through from Meta

This is the part most comparisons skip, and it can matter more than the subscription. Neither Wati nor Manychat sets the price of a WhatsApp message. Meta does, and both tools pass the charge on to you.

  • Per message, not per conversation. Wati’s help center explains that Meta moved from per-conversation to per-message billing on 1 July 2025.
  • Price depends on category and country. Marketing, utility and authentication templates each have their own rate, set by the recipient’s country code. Wati says charges follow the Wati rate card; Manychat lists per-message rates by market in its WhatsApp pricing guide.
  • Service replies became billable on 1 October 2026. Free-form replies inside the 24-hour customer service window (from agents, bots or AI) are now charged per message at your market’s utility rate, after Meta’s 1,000 free service messages per number per month. Utility templates sent inside the window are billable again from the same date.
  • Ad-driven chats get a free window. From 28 September 2026, conversations started from Click-to-WhatsApp ads and similar entry points get a free messaging window of up to 7 days, according to Wati.
  • Messages customers send you are free.

How you pay differs slightly. Wati uses prepaid credits that you top up before sending. Manychat deducts billable messages from a Manychat Wallet right after delivery. Neither pricing page we reviewed states a markup over Meta’s own rates, so compare the per-country rate cards for the markets you send to before you commit.

Which one should you pick? Start with where customers message you

Choose Wati if…

  • Your customers are in a market where WhatsApp is the default way to contact a business, such as much of Latin America, the Middle East, India, Southeast Asia, parts of Europe and Africa.
  • Two or more people need to answer the same number, with assignment, teams and shift coverage.
  • You send order updates, appointment reminders, payment reminders or promotions to opted-in customers.
  • You want WhatsApp tied into Shopify, HubSpot, Salesforce or Google Sheets.

Typical fits: clinics, salons, real estate agencies, education providers, local retailers and e-commerce stores that run support over WhatsApp. See Wati’s plans and trial.

Choose Manychat if…

  • Instagram is your main growth channel and you post Reels, stories or Lives regularly.
  • You want comments and story replies to turn into DMs that deliver a link, a freebie or a discount code.
  • You want to collect emails or phone numbers inside DMs and pass them to your email tool.
  • You are a solo creator or a very small team and want to start free.

Typical fits: coaches, course creators, influencers, DTC brands and service businesses that market on Instagram. Start with Manychat’s free plan.

What about the overlap?

Both tools now cross over. Wati has an Instagram automation page and lists Instagram, Messenger and TikTok DMs as channels. Manychat lets you pick WhatsApp as one of your channels from Pro upward and supports WhatsApp broadcasts and automations. So “can it do X” is rarely the deciding question. The better question is which channel gets the deepest features and the most attention in each product. For Wati that is WhatsApp; for Manychat that is Instagram.

When to use both Wati and Manychat

Running both is not overkill for some businesses. It makes sense when Instagram is where people discover you, but WhatsApp is where they buy and get support. A common split looks like this:

  1. Manychat handles the top of the funnel: a comment keyword on a Reel sends a DM with a lead magnet and asks for an email or phone number.
  2. The DM includes a link to start a WhatsApp chat with your business number.
  3. Wati takes over: the chat lands in the Team Inbox, a bot qualifies the request, and the right person is assigned.
  4. Order updates, reminders and re-engagement campaigns go out through Wati using approved templates.

Before you stack two subscriptions, check whether one tool’s secondary channel is good enough. If WhatsApp volume is small, Manychat Pro with WhatsApp as a channel may cover you. If Instagram is mostly customer service rather than growth, Wati’s Instagram support may be enough. For a wider look at inbox tools, see our guide to customer communication tools for small teams.

Cost scenarios to sanity-check your budget

These are illustrations built only from list prices, not quotes. WhatsApp message fees are left out because they depend entirely on your countries and volume.

  • Solo creator on Instagram: Manychat Free while testing, then Essential at $14/month (annual) once you pass 25 active contacts. Wati would be overkill.
  • Three-person shop answering WhatsApp: Wati Growth at $59/month (annual) covers 3 users, plus Meta message fees. Manychat would need Pro to use WhatsApp at all.
  • Five-person team on WhatsApp with HubSpot: Wati Pro at $119/month (annual) includes 5 users and HubSpot.
  • Brand growing on Instagram that closes on WhatsApp: Manychat Essential or Pro plus Wati Growth, roughly $73 to $88 a month on annual billing before message fees and contact overages.

Keep your DM leads organized in Notion

Whichever tool you choose, automation creates a lot of leads, campaigns and follow-ups that need a home outside the chat app. A simple Notion workspace helps you plan Instagram campaigns and comment keywords, log WhatsApp broadcasts and their results, and track which conversations turned into customers.

  • Marketing Agency OS: plan campaigns, clients and content in one place. Useful if you run Manychat flows or WhatsApp campaigns for clients.
  • Retail Store HQ: manage products, orders and customer follow-ups for a shop that sells over WhatsApp or Instagram.

Both run on Notion. If you do not have a workspace yet, you can start with Notion for free.

FAQ

Is Wati or Manychat better for WhatsApp?

For WhatsApp-heavy support and sales, Wati is the stronger fit because its Team Inbox, campaigns and bots are built around the WhatsApp Business API, and every plan includes WhatsApp. Manychat supports WhatsApp from Pro upward and is a good choice when WhatsApp is a secondary channel next to Instagram.

Does Wati have a free plan?

No. Wati offers a 7-day free trial with no setup fee. Paid plans start with Growth at $59/month billed annually or $69 billed monthly, as of October 2026, plus WhatsApp message fees.

Does Manychat still have a free plan in 2026?

Yes. Under the pricing introduced on 2 March 2026, the Free plan covers up to 25 active contacts with basic automations. Older accounts and some regions may see a different plan lineup, so check your account’s billing page.

Do I pay Meta separately for WhatsApp messages?

You pay through the tool. Wati charges Meta’s per-message fees from prepaid credits based on its rate card, and Manychat deducts them from your Manychat Wallet. Rates depend on message category and the recipient’s country, and from 1 October 2026 service replies are billable after 1,000 free per number per month.

Can Wati automate Instagram comments like Manychat?

Wati lists Instagram as a supported channel and has an Instagram automation page, so Instagram conversations can come into the same inbox. Manychat’s Instagram toolkit is deeper and more mature, with dedicated triggers for post and Reel comments, story replies, mentions, Live comments and shares, so it remains the safer pick when Instagram growth is the main goal.

Which is cheaper for a small business?

Manychat is cheaper to start, with a free plan and Essential at $14/month billed annually. But if WhatsApp is your main channel, compare Manychat Pro ($29 annual) with Wati Growth ($59 annual), and remember Meta’s message fees apply to both and often matter more than the plan price.

Can I use Wati and Manychat together?

Yes. A common setup uses Manychat to capture leads from Instagram comments and stories, then sends people to a WhatsApp chat that Wati manages for sales and support. Just avoid connecting the same WhatsApp number to both platforms.

Bottom line

The Wati vs Manychat decision is really a channel decision. If your customers message you on WhatsApp and a team needs to answer them, Wati is built for that job. If you want Instagram comments and stories to turn into leads, Manychat is the better engine. If Instagram brings people in and WhatsApp is where you close, use both and let each do what it does best. Budget for Meta’s WhatsApp message fees either way, especially now that service replies are billable.
